If you are currently straightening your smile with braces, our Memphis Orthodontic Specialists, P.C. team asks that you do everything you can to keep your appliance and pearly whites in tip-top shape, and we have some tips that will help you do so! To work toward a healthy and successful orthodontic experience, we recommend doing the following things:
Keep up on oral hygiene
Oral hygiene is vital, especially during orthodontic treatment. If you don’t properly clean your smile each day, food and plaque can get stuck in the small crevices of your teeth and appliance, which can easily cause tooth decay, enamel stains, and gum disease. So, please brush and floss your smile after each meal and snack and do your best to rinse your mouth with mouthwash once a day.
Avoid certain foods
As you may already know, there are certain foods that can hurt your teeth and appliance while you are aligning your smile. Those foods are sugary, starchy, sticky, and chewy products. Please do your best to avoid eating these foods while your smile is transforming.
Wear a mouthguard
If you are an athlete, please wear a mouthguard while you play sports. This is important because the mouthguard will protect your smile and appliance when hard, forceful objects hit them. Wearing a mouthguard will reduce your chances of injuring your smile and bite.
